Artisans have always been at the heart of the world’s supply of trinkets, food and art. The vibrant tradition of artisan offers a glimpse into the past, showing how artefacts common today were originally made by hand. Today, more and more artisans are retiring as countries have more efficient and cheaper ways of producing items. Thereby artisans from all over the world are facing the challenges in keeping traditional practices and crafts alive. This photography serie by Medya gives an insight into the remaining artisans in Haarlem (NL). “The historic city of Haarlem has given me an insight into the life of some remaining artisans. Artisans are often passed down from generation to generation, which I find fascinating. The people I have photographed take the time to bring some of this history to life.“
This series of photographs is currently (05 July- 27 Sept 2024) on display at Anno Haarlem. Anno Haarlem is a unique visitor centre located in the Town Hall at Grote Markt 2 in Haarlem.
